Yohen (or special effect created by controlled kiln temperatures)
Shimaoka pottery uses the method of creating a strong reduction and carbonization phenomenon by feeding charcoal into to the ‘first baking chamber’ (next to the combustion chamber located at the front of the ascending kiln) when its temperature reaches 1300℃. This creates an unusual pattern in the glaze as a result of the flying ash of combustion.
